How to write physical education comments for Stages 4-6
- Name the context and the skill: passing and moving in team games, linking movements into a gymnastics sequence, or running and jumping in athletics. A next step such as practising with a partner is clear.
- Tactics matter more in Stages 4-6. Describe whether the student understands simple attacking and defending ideas and uses them in games.
- Describing what went well after an activity is an early evaluation skill. Mention it if the student does it.
Watch out: Avoid comments on weight, size, fitness or health, and do not compare students with each other. Describe learning in lessons: skills, understanding, practice and how the student works with others.
The four levels describe how independently and securely the student shows what has been taught, never a grade or a test result. Extending suits accurate, independent work applied to unfamiliar tasks, with reasons explained; Secure suits accurate work in familiar tasks with occasional support; Developing suits learning shown sometimes, or with a model, word bank or worked example; Beginning names what is starting to show and the support that helps. Show the level through the work rather than writing the level word.
