BC Core Competencies Report Comments, K-9
In British Columbia, Kindergarten to Grade 9 teachers write descriptive feedback in the written learning updates, covering strengths, areas for growth and ways families can help, as the K-12 Student Reporting Policy asks, while students self-assess the Core Competencies and set goals. The Provincial Proficiency Scale (Emerging, Developing, Proficient, Extending) is used for learning standards; these example comments only borrow its four names as comment levels and are not a teacher grade of any competency.
Each page below covers one skill for one grade band, with sample strengths and next steps at every level and tips for writing your own. These comments are written for the written descriptive feedback on the Core Competencies in a BC K-9 learning update or summary of learning (descriptive comments, not proficiency-scale marks).

The 4 comment levels
| Code | Level |
|---|---|
| X | Extending |
| P | Proficient |
| D | Developing |
| E | Emerging |
The proficiency scale is used for learning standards; here its four names only label levels of written feedback on a Core Competency facet. Extending-level wording describes depth, independence and new situations; Proficient, regular use in familiar ones; Developing, parts of the facet with support; Emerging, first steps with guidance. Add the evidence instead of restating a level, so the comment never reads as a grade.
Tips for Core Competencies comments
- Connect your comment to the student's own Core Competency self-assessment. If a student named a strength in their reflection, confirm it with one example you saw, or gently add an area for growth they did not mention.
- Write about the one or two facets that told the clearest story this period rather than all seven, and make sure the comment covers a strength, an area for growth and one way families can help.
- Comment length and layout vary by district and reporting tool, so check your limit before writing. Spend the space on one observed example and one doable next step, not on restating the facet description.
