Australian Learning Behaviour Report Comments, Foundation-Year 6
Australian primary schools report to parents and carers twice a year, with a Semester 1 report at mid-year and a Semester 2 report in December, and some schools add a Term 1 interim report. Alongside the learning areas, classroom teachers rate learning behaviours and work habits, often with a short written comment. Many schools use a four-point frequency scale of Consistently, Usually, Sometimes and Rarely, as in the ACT procedure and NSW schools.
Each page below covers one skill for one grade band, with sample strengths and next steps at every level and tips for writing your own. These comments are written for the learning behaviours or work habits section of an Australian primary school report.

The 4 comment levels
| Code | Level |
|---|---|
| C | Consistently |
| U | Usually |
| S | Sometimes |
| R | Rarely |
The labels describe how often a behaviour happens, so match your wording to the frequency: Consistently suits reliably or without being asked, Usually suits generally or with few reminders, Sometimes suits at times or when prompted, and Rarely suits is beginning to or with adult support. Name the behaviour you saw rather than restating the rating.
Tips for learning behaviour comments
- Link social development comments to the Personal and Social capability in the Australian Curriculum v9 by naming the element in plain words, such as managing feelings at transitions or noticing how others feel during group work.
- Anchor each comment in one setting families recognise, such as mat time, recess and lunch in the playground, an excursion or assembly. One observed moment tells parents and carers more than a list of general traits.
- Keep each comment to one strength, one next step and, where it helps, one low-cost home routine such as a set time for home reading. Character limits are set in each school's reporting software, so check yours before drafting.
