How to write effort and engagement comments for Years 3-6
- Refer to a specific project, assignment or presentation and what the extra effort looked like, such as redrafting a paragraph, checking calculations or adding researched detail beyond the task.
- Separate participation from confidence: a quiet student may engage through thoughtful written responses or questions after a lesson. Say how they engage instead of marking them down for speaking less.
- Tie next steps to success criteria, for example checking a project against the criteria before handing it in, so the student and family share a clear standard to work towards.
Watch out: Praising effort with vague words like 'tries hard' gives families nothing to act on. Name the task and what the student did, such as rereading a draft or asking a question about a maths strategy.
The labels describe how often a behaviour happens, so match your wording to the frequency: Consistently suits reliably or without being asked, Usually suits generally or with few reminders, Sometimes suits at times or when prompted, and Rarely suits is beginning to or with adult support. Name the behaviour you saw rather than restating the rating.
