BC Report Card Comments by Subject, K-9
Under BC's K-12 Student Reporting Policy (in force since July 2023), K-9 teachers report on each area of learning currently being studied, in at least two written learning updates and again in the June summary of learning. Each area gets a Provincial Proficiency Scale indicator (Emerging, Developing, Proficient, Extending) plus descriptive feedback: concise, plain-language comments on strengths and areas for further growth, tied to the learning standards. Letter grades and percentages are for Grades 10-12 only.
Each page below covers one skill for one grade band, with sample strengths and next steps at every level and tips for writing your own. These comments are written for the descriptive feedback for each area of learning in a BC K-9 written learning update or summary of learning (the proficiency scale indicator itself is entered separately).

The 4 comment levels
| Code | Level |
|---|---|
| X | Extending |
| P | Proficient |
| D | Developing |
| E | Emerging |
The Ministry's guidelines describe Emerging as an initial understanding of the concepts and competencies, Developing as partial, Proficient as complete and Extending as sophisticated. Proficient is the goal and does not mean perfect; Extending is about depth and complexity, not extra work or work from a higher grade. Here the four names only choose the wording: report the indicator itself in your reporting tool, and let the comment describe the learning behind it.
Tips for descriptive feedback comments
- Describe what the student can do now in the subject and one specific goal, with how you will support it and how families can help. The Ministry's guidelines ask for strengths-based, plain-language feedback, so explain any term a family may not know in brackets.
- Keep work habits, effort and behaviour out of the subject comment. BC reports learning habits and the Core Competencies separately from academic learning, so a subject comment should be about reading, math, science and so on.
- Comment boxes and length limits vary by district and reporting tool. One classroom example, such as a piece of writing, an investigation or a performance, says more than a summary of every unit taught.
