How to write science comments for K-Grade 3
- Use an observation you saw: noticing how a plant changed, sorting materials by what they feel like or predicting whether an object will sink or float. Name the skill, such as observing closely or asking a question.
- Describe how the child records and shares what they found, such as a labelled drawing, a simple chart or telling a partner. A next step can be adding one more detail or label to a drawing.
- Outdoor, place-based learning is common in K-3 science in BC. A walk to notice weather, seasons or living things in the schoolyard is good evidence, and families can do the same on a neighbourhood walk.
Watch out: Avoid reporting only which topics were covered or how neat the science notebook is. Describe what the student can do as a scientist, such as questioning, testing, analyzing or explaining.
The Ministry's guidelines describe Emerging as an initial understanding of the concepts and competencies, Developing as partial, Proficient as complete and Extending as sophisticated. Proficient is the goal and does not mean perfect; Extending is about depth and complexity, not extra work or work from a higher grade. Here the four names only choose the wording: report the indicator itself in your reporting tool, and let the comment describe the learning behind it.
