How to write physical and health education comments for K-Grade 3
- Name the movement skill, such as hopping, balancing, throwing or catching, and what the child can do now, for example catching a large ball with two hands. Families can practise the same skill in the park.
- Health learning in K-3 includes naming feelings, knowing safety rules and identifying trusted adults. Describe what the child can explain or show in a lesson, in general terms.
- Describe cooperative games in terms of learning, such as moving safely in a shared space or following game rules, rather than how much the child likes gym.
Watch out: Avoid basing the PHE comment on athletic ability, team selection or participation alone. Describe movement skills, strategies and health understanding shown in lessons, and keep personal health and body comments out.
The Ministry's guidelines describe Emerging as an initial understanding of the concepts and competencies, Developing as partial, Proficient as complete and Extending as sophisticated. Proficient is the goal and does not mean perfect; Extending is about depth and complexity, not extra work or work from a higher grade. Here the four names only choose the wording: report the indicator itself in your reporting tool, and let the comment describe the learning behind it.
