How to write arts education comments for K-Grade 3
- Name the art form and the skill you saw, such as keeping a steady beat, using colour and line to show a feeling, or taking on a role in a drama game, rather than a general comment about enjoying art.
- Describe how the child talks about art: whether they can say what they notice in their own or a classmate's work, or explain one choice they made. This is the reasoning and reflecting competency.
- Sharing and performing are part of the learning. Mention singing with the class, showing a dance to a partner or explaining a painting at a class gallery walk, and keep it about the learning, not confidence.
Watch out: Avoid comments about natural talent or how well a student draws. The curriculum assesses exploring, reflecting, communicating and connecting, so describe the process and choices, not innate ability.
The Ministry's guidelines describe Emerging as an initial understanding of the concepts and competencies, Developing as partial, Proficient as complete and Extending as sophisticated. Proficient is the goal and does not mean perfect; Extending is about depth and complexity, not extra work or work from a higher grade. Here the four names only choose the wording: report the indicator itself in your reporting tool, and let the comment describe the learning behind it.
