Scottish Primary Report Comments, P1-P7
In Scottish primary schools the class teacher writes these comments for parents and carers, usually in the learning skills or general comment section of an interim report, a learning snapshot or the end-of-session report. Schools and local authorities set the format within national guidance, so layouts vary. These examples describe learning skills and dispositions on a four-point scale of Secure, Consolidating, Developing and Beginning, while progress in curriculum areas is reported separately.
Each page below covers one skill for one grade band, with sample strengths and next steps at every level and tips for writing your own. These comments are written for the learning skills or general comment section of a Scottish primary school report.

The 4 comment levels
| Code | Level |
|---|---|
| S | Secure |
| C | Consolidating |
| D | Developing |
| B | Beginning |
Let the level shape the wording. Secure suits consistently, independently and without being asked; Consolidating suits usually and with growing confidence; Developing suits sometimes and with reminders; Beginning names what the pupil can do with adult support or a visual prompt. Show the level through one behaviour you have seen rather than repeating the word itself.
Tips for report comments
- Keep this comment about how the pupil learns, not what they have attained. Leave curriculum area progress and assessment results to the subject sections, and describe habits such as settling to a task, asking questions or helping a classmate.
- National guidance on reporting to parents and carers expects clear next steps and ways families can help. Pair one classroom target, such as rehearsing ideas with a talk partner, with one free routine that parents and carers can try at home.
- If your school uses meta-skills or the four capacities, a light touch works best: 'shows real initiative' or 'adapts well' echoes that language. Do not explain the framework itself; parents want to know what their child actually does in class.
