How to write resilience and adapting comments for P4-P7
- Cite how the pupil responds to feedback: do they act on a written comment or a peer's suggestion in the next piece? Parents can then look for that change when they see the jotters.
- Look at self-set targets in a learning log or self-assessment against success criteria. Comment on whether targets are realistic and followed through, not just whether they were written down.
- For older pupils, mention adapting to bigger changes, such as a new class, mixed-stage groups or, in P7, getting ready for the move to high school. Keep it general and forward-looking.
Watch out: Avoid describing resilience as a fixed trait a pupil has or lacks. Describe what they did after a setback and the support that helped, so the next step feels achievable rather than a judgement.
Let the level shape the wording. Secure suits consistently, independently and without being asked; Consolidating suits usually and with growing confidence; Developing suits sometimes and with reminders; Beginning names what the pupil can do with adult support or a visual prompt. Show the level through one behaviour you have seen rather than repeating the word itself.
