How to write resilience and adapting comments for P1-P3
- Use small, real moments: sounding out a tricky word, rebuilding a model that fell or trying again in PE. Persistence at this age lasts minutes, so describe it on that scale.
- Note how the child copes with change, such as a new seat, a different adult or an assembly that moves the usual routine. Describe the support that helps, like an early warning or a visual timetable.
- For reflection, refer to learning stories or talking about a photo of their work. Record one thing the child said they can do now, which shows early self-assessment in a way parents understand.
Watch out: Avoid describing resilience as a fixed trait a pupil has or lacks. Describe what they did after a setback and the support that helped, so the next step feels achievable rather than a judgement.
Let the level shape the wording. Secure suits consistently, independently and without being asked; Consolidating suits usually and with growing confidence; Developing suits sometimes and with reminders; Beginning names what the pupil can do with adult support or a visual prompt. Show the level through one behaviour you have seen rather than repeating the word itself.
