How to write focus and independence comments for P1-P3
- Describe what happens after the carpet input: does the child remember the task and start straight away? For younger pupils this move to tables is the clearest everyday measure of focus.
- Mention routines such as hanging up a jacket, unpacking the reading book or tidying up after golden time. These show independence at P1 to P3 and are easy for families to practise.
- Keep focus targets small and visual: a picture checklist, a sand timer or one instruction at a time. Say which tool helps, so parents and carers can use the same approach at home.
Watch out: Do not read silence as focus. A pupil sitting quietly may be stuck or waiting for help, so describe how quickly they start, what they do when unsure and how much they complete.
Let the level shape the wording. Secure suits consistently, independently and without being asked; Consolidating suits usually and with growing confidence; Developing suits sometimes and with reminders; Beginning names what the pupil can do with adult support or a visual prompt. Show the level through one behaviour you have seen rather than repeating the word itself.
