How to write focus and independence comments for P4-P7
- Comment on homework habits: name what comes in on time and what tends to slip, such as learning log entries. Families can act on a specific pattern far more easily than general advice to be organised.
- Look for initiative, such as starting the next task without being asked, finding resources for research or managing time on a longer project. One example shows independence beyond simply working quietly.
- Where devices are used, note whether the pupil stays on the set task. A timer, a written task list or short check-ins make practical next steps for pupils who drift.
Watch out: Do not read silence as focus. A pupil sitting quietly may be stuck or waiting for help, so describe how quickly they start, what they do when unsure and how much they complete.
Let the level shape the wording. Secure suits consistently, independently and without being asked; Consolidating suits usually and with growing confidence; Developing suits sometimes and with reminders; Beginning names what the pupil can do with adult support or a visual prompt. Show the level through one behaviour you have seen rather than repeating the word itself.
