Curriculum for Wales Report Comments, Reception-Year 6
In primary schools in Wales, the class teacher writes these comments for parents and carers in termly updates and the annual report. Schools must share information about progress with parents and carers at least termly and provide an annual summary, in a format the head teacher decides, so layouts vary. These examples describe the Curriculum for Wales integral skills and dispositions on a four-point scale: Consistently, Usually, Sometimes and Not yet.
Each page below covers one skill for one grade band, with sample strengths and next steps at every level and tips for writing your own. These comments are written for the comments on skills and dispositions in the termly updates and annual report of a primary school in Wales.

The 4 comment levels
| Code | Level |
|---|---|
| C | Consistently |
| U | Usually |
| S | Sometimes |
| N | Not yet |
Let the rating shape the wording. Consistently suits reliably, independently and without being asked; Usually suits regularly and with few reminders; Sometimes suits at times and with some support; Not yet names what the learner can do with adult support or a visual prompt. Show the rating through one behaviour you have seen rather than repeating the word itself.
Tips for report comments
- Keep this comment about how the learner learns, such as settling to a task, asking questions, keeping going or helping a classmate. Describe habits and dispositions you have seen, and leave subject content to other parts of the report.
- Linking a skill to one of the four purposes can help families see why it matters, for example teamwork as part of becoming an ethical, informed citizen. Use this lightly, in one phrase, and spend most words on what the learner actually does.
- Because updates go home every term, make each next step small enough to review by the next one. Pair one classroom target, such as a checklist or a talk partner, with one free routine parents and carers can try at home.
