How to write creativity and innovation comments for Reception-Year 2
- Describe a new idea in play: an unexpected use for junk modelling, a twist on a familiar story in the role play area or a pattern made outdoors. Say what was new about it.
- For risk-taking, note whether the child will try an unfamiliar material or activity without an adult beside them. Naming the support that helps, such as a friend to try with, gives parents something to copy.
- Developing ideas at this age can be as simple as adding one detail to a model or drawing after talking about it. Record that change, since improvement matters more than the first attempt.
Watch out: Avoid treating creativity as neat presentation or artistic talent. A beautifully coloured poster may contain no new idea, so describe the idea, the risk taken or the improvement made.
Let the rating shape the wording. Consistently suits reliably, independently and without being asked; Usually suits regularly and with few reminders; Sometimes suits at times and with some support; Not yet names what the learner can do with adult support or a visual prompt. Show the rating through one behaviour you have seen rather than repeating the word itself.
