How to write planning and organising comments for Reception-Year 2
- Describe what happens straight after carpet time: does the child remember what to do and settle to it, or wait to be shown again? Say how many steps they can hold in mind.
- Routines such as hanging up a coat, choosing a reading book or tidy-up time show organisation at this age. Name one the child manages alone and one where a picture checklist still helps.
- For managing resources, note whether the child gets out and puts back equipment in the provision areas. Parents and carers can practise the same habit with toys or packing a school bag.
Watch out: Do not read a quiet, tidy desk as good organisation. Describe how quickly the learner starts, how they manage time and how much they complete, which tells parents far more.
Let the rating shape the wording. Consistently suits reliably, independently and without being asked; Usually suits regularly and with few reminders; Sometimes suits at times and with some support; Not yet names what the learner can do with adult support or a visual prompt. Show the rating through one behaviour you have seen rather than repeating the word itself.
