How to write communication and collaboration comments for P1-P3
- Describe talk partner work on the carpet: does the child turn to their partner, speak in a full sentence and listen to the reply? It is an everyday routine parents can easily picture.
- Look at turn-taking in games, at snack time or during choosing time. A next step such as using a sand timer or rehearsing the words 'Can I have a turn?' is easy to practise.
- For a quiet child, note whether they share ideas with one friend even if not with the whole class. Suggest rehearsing show and tell at home first as a gentle step up.
Watch out: Keep classmates' names and friendship issues out of the written comment. Describe the pupil's own actions, such as listening before replying, and raise anything sensitive at parents' evening or a learning conversation.
Let the level shape the wording. Secure suits consistently, independently and without being asked; Consolidating suits usually and with growing confidence; Developing suits sometimes and with reminders; Beginning names what the pupil can do with adult support or a visual prompt. Show the level through one behaviour you have seen rather than repeating the word itself.
