BC ADST Report Card Comments, Grades 4-9
Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies (ADST) covers applied design (understanding a need, generating ideas, prototyping, testing, making, sharing and reflecting), applied skills (safe use of tools and materials) and applied technologies, including coding and computational thinking, with attention to social, ethical and sustainability factors.
Below are 9 sample sentences for Grades 4-9: one strength and one next step for each of the 4 comment levels (Extending / Proficient / Developing / Emerging), plus a tip for families. They are a small selection from the 144 applied design, skills, and technologies sentences in the full pack. Copy one, then add a detail only you know about the student.

How to write applied design, skills, and technologies comments for Grades 4-9
- Comment on the design process, not only the finished product: how the student understood the user or need, generated more than one idea, tested a prototype (a first working model) and used the results to improve it.
- For coding, describe the thinking in plain words: breaking a task into steps, predicting what the code will do, finding the step that goes wrong and fixing it. Use generic terms such as block-based coding rather than naming a program.
- In Grades 8-9, ADST is often taught as separate modules, such as drafting, food studies, textiles or computer science. Name the module and one specific skill, and include how the student considers sustainability or the user's needs.
Watch out: Avoid judging ADST by how polished the final product looks. Testing, revising and reflecting on a design that did not work at first is central to this area and deserves a sentence.
The Ministry's guidelines describe Emerging as an initial understanding of the concepts and competencies, Developing as partial, Proficient as complete and Extending as sophisticated. Proficient is the goal and does not mean perfect; Extending is about depth and complexity, not extra work or work from a higher grade. Here the four names only choose the wording: report the indicator itself in your reporting tool, and let the comment describe the learning behind it.
