How to write respect and behaviour comments for Years 3-6
- Describe responsibility in older students' terms: owning a mistake without blaming others, looking after devices and equipment, and meeting expectations when a relief teacher is in the room.
- Where relevant, comment on respectful language both online and in person, as upper primary students use digital tools more often, but keep it general rather than describing a specific event.
- For a Consistently rating, note leadership such as modelling expectations for younger students. For lower ratings, describe the agreed strategy, like a reflection sheet or daily check-in, and the progress made.
Watch out: Recounting a single incident or using labels like naughty makes the comment feel like a verdict. Describe the general pattern, the expectation being learned and the support in place, so it stays fair and forward-looking.
The labels describe how often a behaviour happens, so match your wording to the frequency: Consistently suits reliably or without being asked, Usually suits generally or with few reminders, Sometimes suits at times or when prompted, and Rarely suits is beginning to or with adult support. Name the behaviour you saw rather than restating the rating.
