How to write personal awareness and responsibility comments for K-Grade 3
- When describing feelings, name the situation and the strategy together, for example settling after a busy recess or a change in routine by using a breathing picture, so families know when the skill is needed.
- For responsibility, cite a daily routine the child owns: unpacking the home reading bag, doing the class helper job, or tidying a centre before moving on. One routine is enough evidence.
- Link to the child's own goal: if they chose one during a self-assessment conversation, such as putting on outdoor gear alone, say how it is going and what you see now.
Watch out: Avoid presenting feelings as the problem. Write about the strategies a student uses or is learning to manage them, never imply a diagnosis, and keep sensitive details for a conversation with the family.
The proficiency scale is used for learning standards; here its four names only label levels of written feedback on a Core Competency facet. Extending-level wording describes depth, independence and new situations; Proficient, regular use in familiar ones; Developing, parts of the facet with support; Emerging, first steps with guidance. Add the evidence instead of restating a level, so the comment never reads as a grade.
