How to write understanding the world comments for Reception (FS2)
- Refer to topic learning with one example, such as comparing old and new toys, talking about people who help us or describing a walk in the local area. Name vocabulary the child used, like long ago.
- Describe observation and explanation, such as drawing a plant as it grows, sorting animals or saying why ice melts in the sun. A next step can ask the child to explain how or why.
- When writing about celebrations and communities, describe what the child shared or learned, such as explaining a family festival, and keep the focus on understanding rather than on the child's background.
Watch out: Avoid listing the topics the class covered, such as we learned about dinosaurs. Say what this child noticed, asked or explained, and suggest a free outing, like a walk to spot seasonal changes.
At the most secure level, words such as confidently, independently and in a range of situations fit, backed by one example from play. At the earliest level, name what the child can already do and the support that helps, such as modelling or a visual prompt. Let the observation show the level rather than restating it.
