How to write relating to others comments for Years 5-8
- Refer to a group inquiry task and how the student worked with the rōpū: agreeing on roles, building on a classmate's idea, or helping the group reach a decision everyone could accept.
- Comment on how the student gives feedback, in person and on shared digital work, and whether it is specific and kind, as peer feedback plays a bigger part in the senior years.
- Describe how the student handles a different opinion during kōrero, such as disagreeing respectfully with a talk move or finding a compromise, rather than how many friends they have.
Watch out: Describing a friendship problem in detail can identify other tamariki and read as blame. Focus on the child's own part, such as listening or taking turns, and the strategy that is helping.
Each label describes how often you see the behaviour. Consistently suits reliably, independently or without being asked; Usually suits regularly or with few reminders; Sometimes suits at times or with some support; Not yet suits is beginning to, together with the support that helps. Describe what the child actually does rather than repeating the rating, and keep Not yet comments warm and constructive.
