How to write organization comments for Grades 1-3
- Point to physical evidence: a tidy desk or cubby, take-home notices that reach the folder, or having pencil, book and duo-tang ready when a lesson starts. In these grades, organization is largely about materials.
- For planning, mention a simple sequence the child followed, like drawing a picture plan before building or writing, or following first-then steps at a centre, and say whether they did it alone or with help.
- Suggest a home routine parents can see working, such as packing the backpack together the night before, with the child saying each item aloud, rather than general advice to be more organized.
Watch out: Avoid treating Organization and Responsibility as the same skill. Missed deadlines on their own belong under Responsibility; Organization is about how the work was planned, sequenced and resourced, so describe the process.
Match the verbs to the letter. Excellent comments use words like consistently, independently and without reminders; Good uses usually or with few reminders; Satisfactory uses sometimes or with reminders; Needs Improvement describes what the student does with adult support and what is beginning to emerge. Then add the evidence behind the rating rather than repeating the letter in words.
