How to write attitude and engagement comments for KS1 (Years 1-2)
- Name the moment you saw it: joining in with phonics actions, asking a question at show and tell, or exploring during learning through play. Describe what the child did, not how keen they seemed.
- For a quiet child, separate listening from speaking. Note that they follow the story closely on the carpet even if they seldom put a hand up, then suggest rehearsing ideas with a talk partner first.
- Link effort to something parents can see, such as a careful drawing labelled with sounded-out words, so families can praise that specific effort at home rather than offering general praise.
Watch out: Words like enthusiastic, keen and motivated say little on their own. Pair each with evidence, for example 'asks questions about how volcanoes form', so parents know what the enthusiasm actually looks like in class.
Let the frequency word set the tone. Consistently suits language such as reliably, independently and without being asked, while Not yet describes what is emerging and the support that helps, such as an adult nearby or a visual prompt. Rather than restating the rating, show it through one behaviour you have seen and how often it happens.
