How to write collaboration comments for Grades 4-8
- Name the role the student took in a group project, such as recorder, researcher or presenter, and whether they completed it and did a fair share, not just whether the group's product was good.
- Include online collaboration: comments in shared documents, discussion posts and group chats for class work. Growing Success names media-assisted interactions as part of building healthy peer-to-peer relationships.
- For consensus and conflict, describe a specific process: did the student summarize different views, propose a compromise, or bring the group back to the task? Next steps can name a tool such as role cards or a group agreement.
Watch out: Avoid comments that only say the student 'gets along well with others'. Social ease is not the same as collaboration; describe contributions to shared work, such as sharing resources or helping the group decide.
Match the verbs to the letter. Excellent comments use words like consistently, independently and without reminders; Good uses usually or with few reminders; Satisfactory uses sometimes or with reminders; Needs Improvement describes what the student does with adult support and what is beginning to emerge. Then add the evidence behind the rating rather than repeating the letter in words.
