How to write responsibility comments for Grades 4-8
- Name the deadline evidence: how many assignments came in on time this term, whether long-range project checkpoints were met, and whether the student told you ahead of time when something would be late.
- Include classroom commitments beyond assignments: a monitor job, a role in a school club or assembly, or returning signed forms and library books. These show responsibility that is not about marks.
- Make the next step something the student owns rather than the parent, such as writing every due date in the agenda and checking it before leaving class, so older students build accountability themselves.
Watch out: Do not let Responsibility become a homework tally that punishes home circumstances. Balance missed homework with what the student does in class, such as finishing work during the period and owning their behaviour.
Match the verbs to the letter. Excellent comments use words like consistently, independently and without reminders; Good uses usually or with few reminders; Satisfactory uses sometimes or with reminders; Needs Improvement describes what the student does with adult support and what is beginning to emerge. Then add the evidence behind the rating rather than repeating the letter in words.
