How to write physical education comments for S1-S2
- Name the activity and the skill: passing accurately under pressure in basketball, linking movements in a gymnastics sequence, or pacing a run. A named skill shows parents and carers what the pupil can do.
- Describe decision-making as well as technique, such as choosing when to pass or finding space in a game. A next step such as looking up before receiving the ball is concrete and easy to practise.
- Note how the pupil works with others: encouraging teammates, applying the rules fairly or taking a turn to lead a warm-up. These are part of the learning in PE, not only behaviour.
Watch out: Avoid comments on a pupil's body, weight, appearance or natural sporting talent. Describe skills, decisions and understanding shown in lessons, so every pupil gets a next step they can work on.
The four levels describe how secure, accurate and independent the learning is in what has been taught, never a CfE level. Secure suits detailed, accurate work applied to unfamiliar tasks; Consolidating suits a sound grasp with occasional guidance; Developing suits sometimes, or with a model or worked example; Beginning names what is starting to show and the support that helps. Show the level through the work rather than writing the level word.
