How to write social skills comments for Grades 3-5
- Describe the child's role in long group inquiries: who shares out the tasks, who checks in on quieter members, who keeps going when the plan changes. Collaboration is clearest in what the child does for the group.
- For conflict, describe the process the child used, such as listening to both sides, proposing a compromise or asking for help, rather than reporting the incident itself. Keep specific incidents for a conversation.
- Mention respect for different perspectives when the class discusses real-world issues or cultures, noting whether the child can explain a view they disagree with. This is a useful marker at Consolidating and Extending.
Watch out: Avoid 'is popular' or 'has lots of friends', which describe status, not skill. Write about actions any child can learn: inviting others in, sharing a role, calming down after a disagreement.
At Extending, describe independent use and transfer: the child applies the skill in a new unit of inquiry or helps classmates use it. Consolidating fits usually or with few reminders; Developing fits sometimes or with guidance; Beginning names what the child does with adult support and what is emerging. Show the level through one observed example rather than repeating the label.
