ATL Report Card Opening and Closing Comments, K-5
The opener gives a short overall picture of the child as a learner at this point in the year; the closer looks ahead with encouragement or thanks. Both frame the ATL skill comments, so keep them brief and avoid repeating details from the middle.
Here are 14 samples from the 196 openers and closers in the full pack: one of each for every overall level, then one pair written for each report period.

Tips for openers and closers
- On the first or interim report, openers describe how the child has settled into the class and its routines; closers look forward to the rest of the year rather than judging overall progress.
- At mid-year, refer to growth since the start of the year and point the closer at one priority for the second half, matching the next steps in the skill comments.
- End-of-year openers sum up the year; closers wish the child well for the break and the next grade. PYP schools run different school calendars, so avoid naming months, seasons or holidays.
