How to write communication skills comments for K-Grade 2
- Name the setting where talk happens: carpet time, show and tell, the sharing circle. Note whether the child waits for a turn, speaks so others can hear and answers a simple question about what they shared.
- For literacy, describe what the child does with print, such as using letter sounds to label a drawing or retelling a picture book, rather than quoting a reading level parents may not understand.
- Keep any ICT mention simple and observable, like recording a short voice note on a class tablet. If the child has had little device time at school, leave ICT out rather than guess.
Watch out: Do not treat English proficiency as communication skill. For multilingual learners, describe how the child shares ideas (gesture, drawing, home language, short English phrases) rather than rating them down for limited English.
At Extending, describe independent use and transfer: the child applies the skill in a new unit of inquiry or helps classmates use it. Consolidating fits usually or with few reminders; Developing fits sometimes or with guidance; Beginning names what the child does with adult support and what is emerging. Show the level through one observed example rather than repeating the label.
