How to write research skills comments for K-Grade 2
- Start with questions: note whether the child shares 'I wonder' questions about a provocation or object and suggests a way to find out, such as looking in a book or asking someone at home.
- For recording, describe the method the child uses: drawing what they observe, adding labels, making a tally chart. Note any support used, such as a picture prompt or an adult writing for them.
- Treat show and tell and class displays as a young child's way of communicating findings. Name what the child shared and whether they could answer a classmate's question about it.
Watch out: Judging research by the polish of the final product rewards presentation, not inquiry. Comment on the question, the gathering and the thinking about sources, and save design remarks for communication.
At Extending, describe independent use and transfer: the child applies the skill in a new unit of inquiry or helps classmates use it. Consolidating fits usually or with few reminders; Developing fits sometimes or with guidance; Beginning names what the child does with adult support and what is emerging. Show the level through one observed example rather than repeating the label.
