How to write social skills comments for K-Grade 2
- Use playtime and centre examples parents can picture: sharing blocks, joining a game, accepting a loss in a board game. Name what the child does when a problem arises, such as fetching a teacher or using kind words.
- For empathy, describe a specific response, like comforting a friend who is upset or noticing someone playing alone. At this age, small actions are the clearest evidence of growing social awareness.
- If turn-taking or sharing is still emerging, say what helps: a small group, an adult nearby or a visual cue such as a talking object. Parents can then copy that support at home.
Watch out: Avoid 'is popular' or 'has lots of friends', which describe status, not skill. Write about actions any child can learn: inviting others in, sharing a role, calming down after a disagreement.
At Extending, describe independent use and transfer: the child applies the skill in a new unit of inquiry or helps classmates use it. Consolidating fits usually or with few reminders; Developing fits sometimes or with guidance; Beginning names what the child does with adult support and what is emerging. Show the level through one observed example rather than repeating the label.
