How to write physical education comments for KS3 (Years 7-9)
- Name the activity and the technique: a lay-up in basketball, a controlled forward roll, a crouch start in sprinting. Activities rotate, so where possible pick a skill the student will use again in later units.
- Describe decision-making in games, such as when to pass, how to find space or when to defend. A target linked to one tactical principle helps students who look skilful in drills but less so in matches.
- Credit leadership and officiating, such as leading a warm-up or umpiring a small-sided game, and say what the student did. It gives a rounded picture for students whose own performance is still developing.
Watch out: Avoid any comment on body shape, weight, size or appearance, and do not equate fitness with effort. Describe skills, decisions and understanding, and suggest one practical step, such as rehearsing a technique in drills.
The four levels describe how secure, accurate and independent the learning is, never a grade. Excellent suits precise, perceptive work that applies ideas to unfamiliar contexts; Good suits usually accurate with occasional guidance; Developing suits sometimes, or with a worked example; Needs support names what is emerging and the help that works. Show the level through the work rather than writing the level word.
