How to write organisation and preparation comments for KS3 (Years 7-9)
- For Year 7, describe how the student is managing the new logistics: reading the timetable, packing the right books for each day and reaching classrooms on time. Packing the bag the night before is a simple next step.
- Refer to the planner specifically: are homework tasks written down with due dates, and is it checked at home where your school asks for this? Families can act on that far more readily than 'be more organised'.
- Treat exercise books as a younger student's record of learning: dated headings, sheets stuck in, work caught up after an absence. Name the one habit that would make the biggest difference to their books.
Watch out: Avoid listing every forgotten item or late arrival. Describe the pattern, such as 'calculator missing in about half of lessons', and pair it with one routine, like a checklist by the front door, that fixes it.
Let the described behaviour carry the judgement. Outstanding suits consistently, independently and without being asked; Good suits usually and with few reminders; Requires improvement suits sometimes or when prompted; Unsatisfactory describes what has been happening and the support in place, such as a head of year check-in. Avoid writing the judgement word itself in the sentence.
