How to write conduct and responsibility comments for KS3 (Years 7-9)
- At Key Stage 3, describe conduct across settings: lesson starts, corridors, lunchtime and assemblies. Name where the student does well first, then the one expectation that needs work, so the comment stays balanced.
- Credit younger students' involvement beyond lessons, such as school council, a club or a form charity event, and say what they did. It adds a fair, rounded picture when other parts of the comment are harder.
- Where a Year 7 or 8 student needs regular reminders, describe the support in place, such as a report card or tutor check-in, and what success looks like, so families can reinforce the same target.
Watch out: Avoid recounting detentions, sanctions or individual incidents. Summarise the pattern, such as 'needs reminders to put the phone away at the start of lessons', and the support in place, and discuss specifics directly.
Let the described behaviour carry the judgement. Outstanding suits consistently, independently and without being asked; Good suits usually and with few reminders; Requires improvement suits sometimes or when prompted; Unsatisfactory describes what has been happening and the support in place, such as a head of year check-in. Avoid writing the judgement word itself in the sentence.
