How to write resilience and response to feedback comments for KS3 (Years 7-9)
- At Key Stage 3, describe what the student does at the first sign of difficulty: rereading the question, trying another method, or stopping and waiting. That moment is the clearest evidence of resilience at this age.
- Look in the exercise book for green pen corrections, or your school's equivalent: are they completed fully, and does the next piece show the change? Families can open the book at home and see the same evidence.
- End-of-unit tests may be a younger student's first taste of formal assessment. Describe how they respond to a disappointing result, and suggest one action such as correcting every error in the test review lesson.
Watch out: Avoid praising resilience only when results improve. A student can persevere and still find a topic hard, so describe the persistence and the response to feedback themselves, not just the outcome.
Let the described behaviour carry the judgement. Outstanding suits consistently, independently and without being asked; Good suits usually and with few reminders; Requires improvement suits sometimes or when prompted; Unsatisfactory describes what has been happening and the support in place, such as a head of year check-in. Avoid writing the judgement word itself in the sentence.
