How to write focus and independence comments for Grades 3-5
- Look at independence during long work blocks: starting without a second explanation, using the learning target or success criteria to guide the work, and moving on when stuck rather than waiting for the teacher.
- Mention self-checking and revising, since older students reread their writing, check math answers and use peer feedback. A next step such as a three-item checklist before turning work in is specific and easy to follow.
- Address devices if they affect focus, such as staying on the assigned page during research or typing. Describe the behavior and the routine that helps, like closing other tabs, without framing it as misbehavior.
Watch out: Calling a student easily distracted or in their own world. These sound like fixed traits and offer no next step. Name the situation where focus drops, such as the transition after recess, and the strategy you are using.
At Exceeds (4), describe independence and leadership with words like consistently, without being asked, or models for classmates; at Meets (3), use steady words such as usually or with few reminders. At Approaching (2), say what happens sometimes and what support helps, and at Not yet meeting (1), describe what is emerging with adult support. Never just repeat the mark; describe the behavior behind it.
