How to write relationship skills comments for Grades 3-5
- Describe group roles such as recorder, timekeeper or presenter, and whether the student does a fair share, accepts others' ideas and helps the group finish. Assigned roles make a clear next step for students who dominate or drift.
- Note how the student gives and receives peer feedback on writing and projects. Offering kind, specific suggestions and accepting them without arguing are both concrete, observable skills families can ask about.
- Friendships shift in upper elementary, so focus on inclusion and respectful disagreement: using I-statements, compromising on a project choice, or welcoming a new classmate. Avoid commenting on who the student's friends are.
Watch out: Writing has trouble getting along with others without detail. Families cannot act on it and may feel blamed. Name the setting, such as small-group math or recess games, and the specific skill being practiced, like compromising.
At Exceeds (4), describe independence and leadership with words like consistently, without being asked, or models for classmates; at Meets (3), use steady words such as usually or with few reminders. At Approaching (2), say what happens sometimes and what support helps, and at Not yet meeting (1), describe what is emerging with adult support. Never just repeat the mark; describe the behavior behind it.
