How to write relationship skills comments for Grades K-2
- Cite sharing and turn-taking moments: passing materials at the table, waiting for a turn at centers, or inviting a classmate to join a game at recess. These are the core peer skills of the early grades.
- When writing about conflicts, describe the tool the child is learning, such as using words, saying I feel, or asking an adult for help. Keep other children's names and incident details out of the comment.
- Mention listening on the carpet, like looking at the speaker and responding to a classmate's idea during morning meeting. Families can practice the same skill at dinner by taking turns sharing one thing from the day.
Watch out: Writing has trouble getting along with others without detail. Families cannot act on it and may feel blamed. Name the setting, such as small-group math or recess games, and the specific skill being practiced, like compromising.
At Exceeds (4), describe independence and leadership with words like consistently, without being asked, or models for classmates; at Meets (3), use steady words such as usually or with few reminders. At Approaching (2), say what happens sometimes and what support helps, and at Not yet meeting (1), describe what is emerging with adult support. Never just repeat the mark; describe the behavior behind it.
