How to write respect and responsible decisions comments for Grades K-2
- Connect respect to specific places and routines: walking in the hallway line, using a quiet voice in the library, or keeping hands to self on the carpet. Young students learn expectations by place, so name the place.
- Describe empathy through simple actions, such as checking on a classmate who fell at recess or noticing when a friend looks sad. One action is clearer for families of young children than an abstract word like considerate.
- Caring for the classroom fits K-2 well: putting markers back with caps on, helping at clean-up time or handling library books gently. These give families easy parallels at home, like tidying toys after play.
Watch out: Listing rules the student broke or recounting discipline incidents. Those details belong in a conference or call home. Describe the expectation being worked on, such as walking safely in the hallway, and the support in place.
At Exceeds (4), describe independence and leadership with words like consistently, without being asked, or models for classmates; at Meets (3), use steady words such as usually or with few reminders. At Approaching (2), say what happens sometimes and what support helps, and at Not yet meeting (1), describe what is emerging with adult support. Never just repeat the mark; describe the behavior behind it.
