How to write focus and independence comments for Grades K-2
- Describe directions by length: whether the student follows one, two or three steps, such as get your book, sit on the carpet and open to the bookmark. This tells families exactly what to practice at home.
- Note how long the student stays with a task at centers or independent reading, and what helps, such as a sand timer or a quiet spot. Describe the real moment rather than comparing the child to classmates.
- Name the try-first strategies young students use before asking: checking the anchor chart, asking a buddy or sounding out a word. Parents can encourage the same habit with homework or chores at home.
Watch out: Calling a student easily distracted or in their own world. These sound like fixed traits and offer no next step. Name the situation where focus drops, such as the transition after recess, and the strategy you are using.
At Exceeds (4), describe independence and leadership with words like consistently, without being asked, or models for classmates; at Meets (3), use steady words such as usually or with few reminders. At Approaching (2), say what happens sometimes and what support helps, and at Not yet meeting (1), describe what is emerging with adult support. Never just repeat the mark; describe the behavior behind it.
