How to write collaboration and communication comments for KS4 (Years 10-11)
- At Key Stage 4, focus on the quality of discussion: building an argument, weighing a counter-view, explaining reasoning in extended answers. These skills also help in interviews for sixth form, college or apprenticeships.
- Practical work and group projects on GCSE and vocational courses depend on shared responsibility. Describe whether the student pulls their weight, keeps the group on task and respects others' contributions when time is tight.
- Credit older students who support peers, such as explaining a concept to a classmate or encouraging someone less confident. Where a student holds back, suggest a manageable step like presenting one finding to the class.
Watch out: Avoid equating confidence with good communication. The student who talks most may not listen, so describe listening and responding to others as well as speaking, and credit quieter students who explain clearly when asked.
Let the described behaviour carry the judgement. Outstanding suits consistently, independently and without being asked; Good suits usually and with few reminders; Requires improvement suits sometimes or when prompted; Unsatisfactory describes what has been happening and the support in place, such as a head of year check-in. Avoid writing the judgement word itself in the sentence.
