How to write engagement and effort comments for KS4 (Years 10-11)
- At Key Stage 4, describe effort in terms of exam courses: attempting the hardest exam-style questions, extending written answers, or asking how a response could reach a higher mark band, rather than simply working hard.
- Distinguish steady effort from bursts before assessments. If engagement dips between mock exams, say so plainly and suggest a lesson-by-lesson habit, such as completing every extension question, that keeps effort even across the course.
- For a capable student who coasts, name the gap between what they produce and what they could, gently and specifically: 'answers are accurate but brief, and adding a reason or example would lift them further.'
Watch out: Avoid treating neat books or good behaviour as engagement. A compliant student can still be passive, so describe participation and challenge-seeking directly, and leave conduct to the conduct comment.
Let the described behaviour carry the judgement. Outstanding suits consistently, independently and without being asked; Good suits usually and with few reminders; Requires improvement suits sometimes or when prompted; Unsatisfactory describes what has been happening and the support in place, such as a head of year check-in. Avoid writing the judgement word itself in the sentence.
