How to write independent study comments for KS4 (Years 10-11)
- At Key Stage 4, judge independence by the quality of revision, not the hours: past questions attempted and marked, flashcards made and used, gaps identified after mocks. A next step can name a revision timetable with topics.
- Mention coursework or NEA where relevant, noting whether the student plans sections, works on drafts outside lessons and checks the guidance before asking. Leave the standard of the coursework itself to other parts of the report.
- Link independent study to what lies ahead: study leave and sixth form or college both involve long stretches of self-directed work, so a target such as one focused hour with the phone in another room is practical.
Watch out: Do not judge independent study by completion alone. Homework ticked off on a platform may have been rushed or guessed at, so comment on its quality and on how the student uses the feedback from it.
Let the described behaviour carry the judgement. Outstanding suits consistently, independently and without being asked; Good suits usually and with few reminders; Requires improvement suits sometimes or when prompted; Unsatisfactory describes what has been happening and the support in place, such as a head of year check-in. Avoid writing the judgement word itself in the sentence.
