How to write independent learning comments for Years 7-8
- Note how the student gets going on a task alone, for example reading the instructions in full and starting without waiting. For quieter Year 7 students, also say whether they ask when genuinely stuck.
- Many Year 7 students sit secondary tests for the first time. Suggest one specific study method, like writing ten practice questions from class notes and answering them two days later, rather than simply rereading.
- Mention the help available by name, such as homework club or study support at lunch, and whether the student has used it. This tells families exactly where to point their child when homework gets hard.
Watch out: Avoid treating asking for help as a lack of independence. Seeking help early is part of this behaviour, so describe when and how the student asks, and reserve concern for waiting until a task is overdue.
Let frequency words carry the rating. Consistently suits reliably, independently or without being asked; Usually suits generally or with few reminders; Sometimes suits at times or when prompted. For Rarely, describe what is emerging and the support that helps, such as weekly check-ins with the year adviser. Show the behaviour you saw rather than restating the rating.
