Australian Secondary Report Opening and Closing Comments, 7-10
The opening sentence gives parents and carers an overall picture of how the student has approached learning in the reporting period, whether from one subject teacher or the home group or mentor teacher, and the closing sentence looks ahead with a realistic, warm wish.

Tips for openers and closers
- In a Term 1 progress report, base the opener on how the student has settled into the year, especially the move to secondary school for Year 7, and close with one focus for the rest of the term.
- At mid-year, the Semester 1 opener can sum up the first half of the year, and the closer can mention the winter holidays and one priority to carry into Semester 2, such as earlier exam preparation.
- The Semester 2 report looks back over the whole year, so close with wishes for the summer holidays and the next year level or senior years. At the Rarely level, keep the closer honest, hopeful and specific.
