How to write respect and responsibility comments for Years 7-8
- For Years 7 and 8, describe conduct in settings families know: lining up for class, moving between rooms, the locker area and lunchtime. Start with where the student does well, then name the one expectation to work on.
- Younger secondary students may be new to using a device in every lesson. Note whether they use the laptop or device for the task set, and keep any online concern general rather than recounting an event.
- For a lower rating, describe the support in place, such as a check-in with the year adviser or a reflection conversation, and any improvement since the start of term, so families can reinforce the same target.
Watch out: Avoid words like attitude, rude or immature, which state a verdict rather than a behaviour. Describe what happens, such as talking over others during instructions, and the expectation and support in place.
Let frequency words carry the rating. Consistently suits reliably, independently or without being asked; Usually suits generally or with few reminders; Sometimes suits at times or when prompted. For Rarely, describe what is emerging and the support that helps, such as weekly check-ins with the year adviser. Show the behaviour you saw rather than restating the rating.
