How to write respect and responsibility comments for Years 9-10
- In Years 9 and 10, emphasise responsibility for learning: catching up after absence, owning a mistake and managing phone use. Describe the behaviour and its effect, such as lost learning time, in plain, adult terms.
- Academic honesty matters more with larger tasks and AI tools. Describe it in general terms, such as acknowledging sources and submitting their own work, and discuss any specific concern directly with the family.
- Note conduct where the usual teacher is not watching, such as on excursions, at assemblies or on work experience, since behaving well in those settings is clear evidence of responsibility at this age.
Watch out: Avoid words like attitude, rude or immature, which state a verdict rather than a behaviour. Describe what happens, such as talking over others during instructions, and the expectation and support in place.
Let frequency words carry the rating. Consistently suits reliably, independently or without being asked; Usually suits generally or with few reminders; Sometimes suits at times or when prompted. For Rarely, describe what is emerging and the support that helps, such as weekly check-ins with the year adviser. Show the behaviour you saw rather than restating the rating.
