How to write independent learning comments for Years 9-10
- For exam preparation, describe how the student revises, such as testing themselves with practice questions or only rereading notes. Active recall is a concrete next step families can support by asking quick questions at home.
- Track feedback across tasks: does advice from one assessment task show up in the next? Name one comment the student acted on, or suggest keeping a feedback list to check before submitting.
- Link independence to what comes next, such as elective choices and moving towards senior secondary study, where more work happens outside class. Keep the link general and focus on one habit, like a focused hour with the phone elsewhere.
Watch out: Avoid treating asking for help as a lack of independence. Seeking help early is part of this behaviour, so describe when and how the student asks, and reserve concern for waiting until a task is overdue.
Let frequency words carry the rating. Consistently suits reliably, independently or without being asked; Usually suits generally or with few reminders; Sometimes suits at times or when prompted. For Rarely, describe what is emerging and the support that helps, such as weekly check-ins with the year adviser. Show the behaviour you saw rather than restating the rating.
