KS4 Design and Technology Report Comments (Years 10-11)
Design and technology covers researching users and needs, writing briefs and specifications, developing ideas through sketching, modelling and CAD, making safely and accurately, including with CAM, testing and evaluating products, and technical knowledge of materials, mechanisms, electronics and sustainability.
Below are 13 sample sentences for KS4 (Years 10-11): two strengths and one next step for each of the 4 comment levels (Excellent / Good / Developing / Needs support), plus a tip for families. They are a small selection from the 288 design and technology sentences in the full pack. Copy one, then add a detail only you know about the student.

Excellent E
Strengths
- Thorough revision shows in [Name]'s detailed grasp of the specialist material area, including stock forms, surface finishes and scales of production.
- Research into the work of designers and companies gives [Name] original, well-reasoned inspiration rather than a style to copy.
Next step
- Linking every evaluation point to evidence from testing, photographs or user feedback would raise the rigour of [Name]'s coursework.
Good G
Strengths
- [Name] can tackle the maths on the course, such as scale, area and material costs, with mostly accurate working.
- In product analysis tasks, [Name] often makes thoughtful links between existing products, the designers behind them and the needs they meet.
Next step
- Explaining scales of production, from one-off to mass production, with a product example for each, would add detail to [Name]'s exam answers.
Developing D
Strengths
- Models and prototypes in [Name]'s design project show some iteration, and the changes are clearer when each one is explained in notes.
- When looking at the work of designers, [Name] is developing the skill of explaining what makes a product successful.
Next step
- A revision mind map of key facts for each material group would help [Name] answer exam-style questions with more detail.
Needs support N
Strengths
- With guidance, [Name] is beginning to make and test simple models for the design project and to note what changed.
- Handling a working model helps [Name] begin to recognise how a lever or a wheel makes a movement easier.
Next step
- Drawing and labelling one simple mechanism, such as a lever, from a worked example would help [Name] answer a short exam-style question.
Support at home
- A visit to a free museum or gallery with a design or engineering collection can spark ideas and give real examples of good design.
How to write design and technology comments for KS4 (Years 10-11)
- For the iterative design project, describe how the student moves between designing, modelling, testing and improving. Name one stage, such as evaluating against the specification, that would strengthen the whole portfolio.
- Comment on making quality: accuracy, tolerances and the finish of the prototype. A next step can be planning manufacture as a sequence of stages so time is not lost near the deadline.
- Technical principles in the written exam need precise terms. Target one area, such as the properties of polymers or how a smart material responds to a change, and suggest learning it with labelled diagrams.
Watch out: Avoid judging the project only by how the finished product looks. Describe the research, testing and improvements behind it, since a modest prototype can rest on strong design thinking and evaluation.
The four levels describe how secure, accurate and independent the learning is, never a grade. Excellent suits precise, perceptive work that applies ideas to unfamiliar contexts; Good suits usually accurate with occasional guidance; Developing suits sometimes, or with a worked example; Needs support names what is emerging and the help that works. Show the level through the work rather than writing the level word.
What Design and Technology covers
